reactions of alcohols sheet

task 3 writing balanced equations for the reactions of alcohols im not sure what needs to go in the eqn just the alcohol itself and the product or alcohol the (conc H2SO4 and the K2Cr2O7 as well the product) ??

Good question, Lois. If you work out the difference in the numbers of atoms of C, O and H in your alcohol versus the aldehyde, ketone or carboxylic acid, you should be able to work out what else is needed in your equation and also what else might be made at the end.

As a general rule, if an organic molecule is being oxidised, we just show it reacting with [o], where [O] signifies the oxidising agent (i.e. K2Cr2O7 in this reaction). You don't show the whole of the K2Cr2O7 as it is only the oxygen from that which is involved in the reaction.

H2SO4 is NOT included in the equation either. Can you suggest why not?
